New generation of servers

Wednesday, 15. May 2013

From today, our customers can benefit from a new generation of servers. As we mentioned in our previous announcement, the offer has been simplified to the following server models:

Pro:

  • 1 Intel Xeon E3-1265LV2 CPU (4 cores)
  • 32 GB RAM
  • 2x 1000 GB 3.5" SATA 7.2k
  • Total of 4 slots for 3.5" HDDs (now also available with SSDs as an option)
  • 1 power supply

Dual:

  • 2 Intel Xeon E5-2630L CPUs (2x 6 cores)
  • 32 GB RAM (can be expanded up to 192 GB as an option)

  • 2x 1000 GB 2.5" SATA 10k

  • Total of 8 slots for 2.5" HDDs (available with SAS or SSDs as an option)

  • Hardware-RAID controller (RAID-0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60)
  • RAID BBU (battery backup unit)
  • 2 power supplies on different power circuits, each with UPS.

The server model SAS/SSD-Xeon is now offered as a Dual, which can be expanded to SAS and/or SSD hard disks to the SAS/SSD-Xeon configuration with the corresponding hardware upgrades. Another change is the entry server model, for which the Pro model’s predecessor generation system is used with two cores instead of four.

Rack server systems from Intel are used as server hardware. It is a little known fact that Intel not only offers high performance CPUs, but also high quality server systems. These server systems have been specially optimized for the data centre environment and provide very high energy efficiency. nine.ch has a strategic partnership with Intel and is one of the few Intel Platinum partners in Switzerland.

The new server models not only improve performance and increase the standard of basic equipment, but also use less electricity, thanks to low power CPUs and high efficiency power supplies, and are thereby more environmentally-friendly than the previous versions. Despite the numerous improvements and updates, the basic price remains the same.

You will benefit from the new server generation when making an order with immediate effect. Orders will be processed in order of receipt and waiting times may arise under some circumstances.

Managed Amazon Cloud for NZZ

Tuesday, 14. May 2013

The website nzz.ch and all its affiliated sites run in the Amazon cloud (AWS). Over the last few months, under nine.ch’s leadership, the nzz.ch infrastructure has been completely rebuilt and integrated with the AWS standards of nine.ch’s Managed Services.

The benefits of nine.ch’s Managed Services can now be combined with the advantages of AWS. The system is monitored around the clock by our on-call Linux experts, who maintain the systems proactively through analysis and security updates, and creation of off-cloud back-ups with a disaster recovery plan.

This project has enabled nine.ch to offer a managed AWS, making it possible to take advantage of the benefits of a true cloud infrastructure with very high flexibility and scalability, as well as the security and ease of nine.ch’s Managed Services. Later this year, nine.ch will develop a standard product to meet this customer need.

“With nine.ch’s innovative and progressive solution, we are now able to respond flexibly to future challenges. The professional and dedicated nine.ch team gave us optimum support in our agile development process throughout the entire project and provided a tailor-made solution to fit our needs.”
Benjamin Hentrich, head of web systems, Neue Zürcher Zeitung AG

nine.ch applies the Code of Conduct Hosting

Wednesday, 8. May 2013

The Code of Conduct Hosting clarifies the role of the hosting provider in connection with the prosecution of illegal content on the internet. The aim of the Code of Conduct is to facilitate the pursuit of the rights of the hosting provider, without their becoming private law enforcement bodies.

Together with leading Swiss hosting companies and the industry association simsa (swiss internet industry association), nine.ch has developed and published guidelines for dealing with illegal content.

The Code of Conduct has been in force since 1 February 2013, and has been used by nine.ch since early May.
