Colocation FAQ
Frequently asked questions about our Colocation products
1. What are the dimensions of the racks?
The racks have the dimensions 1000 (depth) x 600 (width) mm. That is 100 mm more depth than normal.
2. Are there any special needs for the the server equipment?
We recommend rack optimized server hardware only, which ensure the airflow from the cold aisle into the hot aisle. The extracted air from the servers must not enter the cold aisle. Due security reasons source transfer switches, which are able to switch between two power sources, are not allowed.
3. Which connections are included in the rack?
5 power supply connections (230V AC) and 1 Fast Ethernet connection. You can add additional power supply connections via a contact rail. Usually, a switch is required for server connections.
4. What is a "U"?
A unit is the mass unit, which is specified as the height of computer enclosures. A U corresponds to approx. 44.45 mm respectively 1.75 inches.
5. Must all of my servers be rack-mountable?
No, commercial servers can be installed in the rack, also in a barebone construction. However, you should ensure that the servers are securely installed and furthermore that the ventilation is optimal. Rack-mountable 19" enclosures are designed for the environment of data centers and as a result are more efficient in regard to heat extraction.
6. How can I measure the temperature of the rack?
Due to the fact that most hard drives are equipped with a built-in heat sensor, this can be queried without the need for installing additional heat sensors. The corresponding program is called hddtemp and is available as a package for most UNIX distributions. Alternatively, you can read off the temperature sensors of the main boards with lm_sensors.
