VServer FAQ

1. Can additional IP addresses be ordered?

The VServer services can only be operated with a single IP address. For additional SSL certificates additional IP addresses are needed, that for a SSL wrapper is available.

2. What are the specifications of the host system?

The VServers are operated on current Dual-Xeon Dual-Core systems. The number of customers per host system is limited to ensure a minimum total load. This ensures sufficient computing power for your Internet applications.

3. Which GNU/Linux distribution is used?

As standard we install Debian GNU/Linux.

4. Which virtualisation software do you use?

The Linux VServer project is used. This is comparable to FreeBSD Jails and zones in Solaris.

5. Do you also offer VServers based on XEN or VMWare?

Unfortunately not, but you may install any other virtualization technology on a Dedicated Server.

6. Which limitations does the Virtual Server have in comparison to the physical server?

With the virtualisation you do not have access to the hardware and the kernel. For this reason, the following cannot be performed on a VServer:

  • Partitioning/formatting of the hard drive
  • Loading kernel modules
  • Access to iptables (however, you can define the access rules in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny)
  • Integration of partitions by means of mount (additionally no NFS and bind mount)
  • Operation of an NFS server (as this usually runs as a kernel module)
  • No access to the network interface, e.g. for tcpdump
  • Services bound to localhost (127.0.0.1)
  • VPN services

Additionally, you share the server with other customers. The available computing power is divided in a fair manner among all users. However, it is still possible that one user uses too much power. In such a case we migrate the customer in question to a different VServer and recommend an upgrade to a Dedicated Server.

7. What happens when the limits are reached?

The VServers are limited to certain amount of cpu-power, memory, storage space and number of files. The memory may be overbooked for a short period, all other limits are enforced. For example by reaching the storage space limit, the virtual server may not run problem-free any more. To avoid this, please check the limits by using our statistics or any third party application on your virtual server.

8. Which upgrade possibilities do I have when the performance is insufficient?

Many customers first decide to run their applications on a reasonably priced VServer and at a later time switch to a Dedicated Server when it becomes necessary. We can migrate your VServer in its entirety with a minimum of down time (under 5 minutes) to a more powerful Dedicated Server.

9. Can I restart the VServer?

To restart the vserver please contact us. Keep in mind that the vserver may get rebooted during the weekly maintenance window, during the night from Monday to Tuesday, 00:00 till 02:00 CEST.
