FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes are available, and can I customise one?
We offer preset machine types from nine-small-1 (1 vCPU, 2 GiB RAM) to nine-highmem-4 (4 vCPU, 32 GiB RAM). If none of them fits, define a custom machine type with up to 24 vCPUs and 64 GiB RAM and a RAM-to-vCPU ratio between 2 and 8. Need something larger? Contact us.
How is Root CloudVM billed?
To the exact minute, based on your actual usage. The monthly prices show what a CloudVM costs if it runs for the whole month.
What’s included in the price, and what isn’t?
We provide the virtual infrastructure, self-service in Cockpit and the network connection. Everything above that, from configuring the operating system to installing services and security patches, is in your hands.
Can I resize my CloudVM later?
Yes. You can adjust vCPU, RAM and block storage in Cockpit at any time. Block storage can only be increased, not reduced, so plan your initial size with that in mind.
Which operating systems can I choose?
Ubuntu LTS, Debian or Rocky Linux, chosen when you create the server. We don’t offer Root CloudVMs with Windows.
How do backups work?
Backups are your responsibility. Our Object Storage gives you S3-compatible backup space, and we recommend duplicity for creating and managing your backups. Our documentation explains it step by step.
Who protects my CloudVM against brute-force attacks?
You do, for example with your own firewall rules or Fail2ban. You can also use our public hosts.deny list. Automatic protection at network level is part of our Managed products.
Can I repair my CloudVM if it no longer boots?
Yes. With the Rescue System (live Linux), which you activate in Cockpit, you can examine and repair your CloudVM, for example after a failed update or a lost password. It requires Linux know-how and doesn’t recover anything automatically.
Is there an SLA?
No. SLAs with guaranteed response times and service credits aren’t available for Root CloudVM. If that matters for your workload, our Managed Server offers an optional SLA.
What if I don’t want to manage the server myself?
Then have a look at our Managed Server: we take care of the operating system, services and security patches for you.
