FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Standard or Performance: which one fits?
The Root Dedicated Server (AMD EPYC 7313P, 16 cores, 32 GB RAM) suits most general-purpose workloads. The Performance variant (AMD EPYC 7443P, 24 cores, 64 GB RAM, hardware RAID-1) is built for particularly high performance requirements. Both can be upgraded with more RAM and storage. We’re happy to advise you.
What’s included in the price, and what isn’t?
We provide the physical hardware with Ubuntu LTS installed, the network connection and the hardware warranty. Everything above the operating system, from installing services to security patches and ongoing administration, is in your hands. If you’d rather have us manage the server, have a look at our Managed Server.
How do backups work?
Backups are your responsibility, we have no access to your data. Add our Object Storage and use a tool like duplicity, our documentation explains it step by step.
What happens if the hardware fails?
Parts and repairs are covered by our hardware warranty at no charge. If the hardware fails completely, we provide a replacement server with a configuration as close to the original as possible within no longer than one business day. It keeps the same IP address.
How do I protect my server against brute-force attacks?
That’s up to you, for example with your own firewall rules or Fail2ban. You can also use our public hosts.deny list, built from failed login attempts on our Managed Servers.
Which operating systems can I install?
We deliver Root Dedicated Servers with Ubuntu LTS. You can install other Linux distributions or a virtualisation platform yourself via the IP-KVM, which is free of charge for the initial setup.
Can I repair my server myself if it no longer boots?
Yes. With the Rescue System (live Linux), which you activate in Cockpit, you can examine and repair your server, for example after a failed update or a lost password. It requires Linux know-how and doesn’t recover anything automatically.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes. More RAM and storage are available on request, and you can move to the latest hardware generation at any time. The current setup fee applies, and the new system is free of charge for the first two weeks so you can migrate. For GPU workloads, have a look at our GPU Server.
What if I don’t need dedicated hardware?
Then our Root CloudVM gives you the same root access on a virtual server that you create yourself in Cockpit, billed to the exact minute.
Is there an SLA?
No. SLAs with guaranteed response times and service credits aren’t available for Root Dedicated Server. If that matters for your workload, our Managed Server offers an optional SLA.
