Managed Server FAQ
Frequently asked questions about our managed Dedicated Server products.
1. What is included in "managed"?
The operation and maintenance of the servers is completely taken care of by Nine. The server including log files and the data system is checked on a regular basis. Additionally, the latest updates and patches are verified and if accepted, installed. Backups are performed daily and stored for so long that a recovery can be performed going back at least seven days. The server services are continuously monitored by our stand-by service. Not included are the installation, configuration and maintenance of customer-specific applications. Usually, these are performed by the clients themselves or commissioned to Nine.
2. Is the Managed Server a highly available, scalable platform?
High availability and scalability are primarily ensured by means of a web farm. For this, a number of server systems are combined into a system that not only distributes the task load by means of load balancing, but also compensates possible failures, ensuring disruptions do not occur. A web farm can be constructed with a number of Managed Servers. Please contact us for personalised advice and take a look on our HA offers.
3. Can I have root access?
In order to clearly differentiate competences and to prevent mutual disruption, we do not grant root access to the Managed Servers. Of course, access with limited rights is possible.
4. What is done in the case of a hardware malfunction?
Thanks to the utilisation of rack-optimised Intel quality servers, hardware defects hardly ever occur. Additionally, the greatest risk posed by hard drive failure is compensated with the use of RAID arrays. If a different component should fail, a spare server system is quickly taken into operation and the complete content is taken from the hard drive, if available, or else restored from the backup.
5. How does monitoring work?
The server services are monitored continuously. If a service does not respond within a defined span of time, a notification of our stand-by service by means of text messaging is immediately triggered (24x7).
6. What are the advantages of the Swiss location?
A Swiss location has shortest direct connections to Swiss providers and therefore offers both lower latencies as well as a higher speed for your customers.
